  • An epic safari adventure in Sri Lanka’s Udawalawe National Park

    February 15, 2019 /

Sri Lankan elephants are one of the sight to see when visiting Sri Lanka. We read that the best place to see these wild gentle giants is in the Uduwalawa Natural Park which is located on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces.

This week the weather has been a big topic in Finland as it's finally warm or hot, depends on who you are asking. Today was almost the hottest June temperature ever recorded in Finland. Guess how much the record is? 33.8 degrees (91.4°F). Yes, that's the all-time high. Just about a regular day where we have been traveling. 😅

We are lucky to call this our backyard as our new apartment is about 100 meters from these views. Today many Finns are heading to their summer cottages to celebrate the summer's biggest feast, Midsummer aka Juhannus. This weekend is all about lighting bonfires, bathing in saunas, enjoying life with friends, and barbecuing.
.
Any plans for this weekend? Do you celebrate the summer solstice wherever you are?

Happy Monday! Summer is finally coming, even here up in the North. One of the best things living in Finland is that nature is always nearby. Over 70 % of Finland is covered by forest – more than any other European country (according to Visit Finland) and an area larger than the UK or Italy 😮. Now that we can enjoy warmer temperatures and Risto has finished his thesis writing marathon, we have been able to explore the outdoors more.

It'll be 18 months since we last had a more permanent place to stay in. Our backpacks and our backs will be getting their long-deserved vacation, as we have signed the lease agreement. We will be moving to the Finnish capital area, to Helsinki's neighboring city Espoo.
.
It feels so great to have your own space again, even if it will be quite an empty one. We are not planning on taking too many pieces of our old stuff from Risto's grandmother's attic, as we will have to move once again at the end of August. But where to? No idea yet.

How's everybody doing? We have been now three weeks back in Finland and haven't taken any pictures as we have mainly stayed inside this whole time. Risto is still writing his thesis and Laura has been job hunting, so this little white Ikea kitchen table has become very familiar. But in all of life's chaos right now, we are celebrating the small victories, like Risto's 500 words per day goal.

This picture was taken in the Peruvian Andes the last September when we were conquering the Rainbow Mountain. It was probably our most physical challenge whilst traveling as we chose to walk the whole way. But this lady from the local Pampachiri indigenous community was hauling tourists on horseback so fast that we couldn't keep up at all.

How have you been keeping yourself motivated?

Celebrating #waterfallwednesday - Have you picked Celebrating #waterfallwednesday - Have you picked up any weird habits during these isolation times? This our list:
.
◆ Laura is fixated on cinnamon and drinks now coffee with lots of it and honey ☕
◆ Risto has an obsession with the Finnish fridge and has look inside at least ten times a day.
◆ We can stay in the next to each other for hours and hours without talking to each other.
◆ Petting a cute little dog was Laura's highlight of the week.
◆ No idea how the weather is, unless its noisy. 🤣

Into to the unknown. . Happy Sunday guys! W Into to the unknown.
.
Happy Sunday guys! We have been quiet with the posts lately, mostly because we've been busy with getting back to our old lives and because Risto has been spending the days with the laptop finally writing his master's thesis. Today is our ninth day of the 14-day self-quarantine in our old home town Turku, Finland. The weirdest thing is, that we feel like total strangers here.
.
Our life is somewhat similar to what we had gotten used to in Bangkok since mid-March. The biggest differences are that we may go walking outside freely (even with the quarantine on); there is absolutely no temperature control here, not even at the airport; and we are almost the only ones wearing masks when stepping outside. Now we have to just figure out what to do with our lives. 😅
.
How's your weekend been so far? We are hoping to watch some After Life season 2. 🙌

Happy Thai New Year guys! This will be our final w Happy Thai New Year guys! This will be our final week in Bangkok as we found a flight back to Helsinki. So, we are heading to Finland on Friday with mixed feelings.
.
Mentally we were prepared to stay here in Bangkok for several months due to all the travel restrictions, flight bans, and the fact that COVID-19 situation will take some time to resolve. But we have also been a bit worried about our visa situation. Last week foreigners' visas got automatically extended until the end of this month, and thus we got 11 more days of legal stay in Thailand. They will probably keep giving more time as long as things calm down, but it's a bit stressful to not know, whether it will happen. Our plan M (we can't really keep track of the letters anymore) was to go to South Korea on 17th April, as there were still some direct flights at a reasonable price from Bangkok to Seoul, and the borders have still been open. But just like with so many other countries, South Korea just suspended its visa-free program.
.
On Saturday we got a text message from the Finnish Embassy in Thailand about an evacuation flight to Helsinki on 17th April, and we decided it is the best thing to do now given the situation. It will mean, that we won't have to worry about the visa, we can take long walks outside and we can help our relatives if it is needed. We just hope, that we won't be taking seats from someone, who really needs to get back to Finland. At least there are still lots of places available on the flight.
.
So now our mission is to eat all of our food stock before we leave. This means a lot of egg dishes. 🤣 And no Songkran celebrations this week as the festival is postponed until further notice.

Our current view from our window on the 20th floor is quite much the opposite of this pic. Instead of the giant redwoods, we are admiring Bangkok's stunning skyline with towering skyscrapers. Even though Thailand isn't on a full lockdown, we are spending our days inside like any good citizens should.

How is your view now?
